Background
Eric graduated from Oxford University in 1994 and trained at St Thomas’ Hospital in London. He also trained and worked in Cambridge, Oxford, Windsor, Bath and Bristol in the UK and worked for five years as a Consultant Specialist Ophthalmologist in the UK before moving to Australia in 2008. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and lives and works in Melbourne. He has worked as a Surgical and Medical Retinal Specialist for over twenty years.
Before moving into Ophthalmology he completed a PhD in Cambridge researching techniques of intrastriatal neural transplantation and was later the recipient of a highly prestigious National Career Scientist Award from the Department of Health and Development. He has over fifty peer reviewed publications evidencing his continual efforts to find new treatments and improvements in care and outcomes for patients. Dr Mayer established the first clinic for Genetics in Eye Disease at Bristol Eye Hospital and was the founder and initiator of bio-electronic interfacing developments and human retinal neural stem cell work, which led to the first identification of stem cells in the Human Retina.
In addition to his Medical work, Dr Mayer has supervised medical and surgical training of junior doctors. He was also an Examiner for the International Council of Ophthalmology for ten years
