Dr Ahern recently relocated to the Gold Coast from Brisbane, where she worked at Redcliffe Hospital in a multidisciplinary rehabilitation ward. She has previously worked in both public and private hospital medicine and enjoy community geriatrics. She has been actively involved in teaching, training and mentoring physician trainees.
She graduated with honours from University of Queensland 1997 and later completed basic physician training at major teaching hospitals in Brisbane. Her advanced training was in geriatric medicine and included a fellowship year in Bath, United Kingdom. She completed a project exploring the feasibility of a multidisciplinary short stay elderly care ward.
She is a past member of the Queensland Statewide Clinical Dementia Network, and a member of the Australasian and New Zealand Society of Geriatric Medicine.
She is committed to improving the quality of life and care of older people. Her approach is patient centred, holistic and incorporates cognitive, physical and social aspects. Her special areas of interest are in dementia care, evaluation and interaction of multisystem diseases, polypharmacy and frailty.
