Mr Dugal James MBBS FRACS (Orth) is a specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon in Bendigo, Central Victoria.

Dugal James graduated from Melbourne University (MBBS) and did his primary surgical training at the Repatriation Hospital, Melbourne. He completed his Orthopaedic Specialist Training (FRACS) with the Australian Orthopaedic Association in 1990 and then undertook further subspecialty Fellowships in lower limb surgery.

Post Graduate Training included Fellowships in knee and sports surgery, lower limb joint replacements and hip replacements.

Mr James undertook a Fellowship with Neil Thompson in Sydney; one of Australia’s pioneers of knee arthroscopy. This was followed by a lower limb joint replacement Fellowship at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Harvard University Boston, USA, under the tutorage of Dick Scott, Tom Thornhill and Fred Ewald. His third placement was a Hip Replacement Fellowship under the mentorship of Robin Ling and the Exeter Group in Exeter, England.

Ongoing Research and Design

Mr. James commenced practice in Bendigo but continued to maintain a close association with his US and British colleagues collaborating on research and design projects. His principal area of interest has been the design of total knee joint prostheses and the specific instrumentation used to introduce them. This interest has seen his practice focus on knee joint arthroscopy, reconstruction and joint replacement surgery of the knee and hip.

An area of interest is the performance of knee arthroscopy under Local rather than General Anaesthesia. He has also developed and refined a method of hamstring ACL reconstruction that obviates the need for metallic fixation devices.

He is actively involved with supervision of local Orthopaedic trainees and travels regularly to present at educational forums in South East Asia.

His outside interests extend to his family and friends in Bendigo and he has been known to steal away for an occasional hour or two on a motorcycle.
