Dr Derek Lok has major interests in different types of IVF treatment including embryo selection through preimplantation genetic diagnosis, recurrent miscarriage and IVF treatment failure management. Derek puts great emphasis on the identification and correction of the fundamental issues which are causing a specific couple to struggle to conceive and offers highly individualised treatment.
Approximately 40 per cent of infertility amongst Australian couples is related to male factors and Derek specialises helping men overcome these issues. Specifically, Derek offers highly specialised medical and microsurgical treatments for men with sperm production problems, including sperm retrieval through microdissection using a high power operative microscope to identify and selectively remove tubules within the testes that contain sperm while also minimising blood vessel damage and tissue removal. He also conducts microsurgical vasectomy reversal through small scrotal incision which results in rapid recovery.
Derek is a certified advanced (Level V) endoscopic surgeon, specialising in fertility related gynaecological surgeries including laparoscopic tubal reversal and tubal surgeries, correction of congenital uterine anomalies, myomectomies (removal of uterine fibroids mostly minimally invasive through endoscopy, permitting same or next day discharge and rapid recovery), treatments of severe endometriosis and pelvic adhesions, conditions which not only may improve a patient’s natural fertility but also their fertility treatment outcomes.
Derek obtained his medical degrees in Hong Kong in 1990 and completed his PhD research in feto-maternal medicine at University of Adelaide in 1994. Following this, he undertook specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Sydney and Adelaide and then sub-specialist training in reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI) in Adelaide and the United Kingdom. Derek was awarded Fellowship (FRANZCOG) in 2001 and a Subspecialist Certificate (CREI) in 2002.
Derek expanded his clinical experiences overseas in 2002 and 2003, mainly as a clinical fellow/lecturer at University of Sheffield, United Kingdom. During that period he also spent time in Infertility and Endoscopic Units in Oxford, London, Paris, Germany, Montreal and Seoul, with assistance of the travelling scholarship awarded by RANZCOG.
Derek is a a consultant gynaecologist at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Liverpool and Westmead Hospitals, offers patient treatment options through both private and public systems. Derek is also a senior clinical lecturer at University of Sydney and University of NSW, a role which involves undergraduate teaching, specialist and sub-specialist training for advanced trainees and research. He also teaches the Master of Reproductive Medicine Course at University of Sydney.
