Declan Murphy is Consultant Urologist, Chair of Uro-Oncology, and Director of Robotic Surgery at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Melbourne, Australia. He also has appointments as Consultant Urologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Director of Outcomes Research at the Australian Prostate Cancer Research Centre, and Honorary Clinical Associate Professor at the Department of Surgery, University of Melbourne. He had previously been Consultant Urologist at Guys & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London.

Originally from Galway in the West of Ireland, Declan completed his basic surgical training in Dublin before moving to London to continue higher specialist training on the South Thames rotation of the London Deanery. He is trained in all aspects of open and endoscopic urology and has a particular interest in laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery, particularly for the management of prostate, renal and bladder cancer.

Following completion of his specialist training at Guy’s Hospital, London, and having been awarded the FRCS Urol in 2006, he spent a year in Melbourne completing a Fellowship in Laparoscopic & Robotic Urology under the supervision of Professor Tony Costello. He returned to Melbourne in 2010 to take up his current positions and was awarded the FRACS in the Specialty of Urology by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2011.

Declan has a strong academic background and has published extensively in the field of minimally-invasive urology for the management of prostate, renal and bladder cancer. He is Associate Editor of the British Journal of Urology International, on the Editorial Boards of European Urology and Nature Reviews Urology, and is a regular reviewer for The Journal of Urology, Journal of Endourology, Journal of Sexual Medicine, Cancer, ANZ Journal of Surgery, Journal of Robotic Surgery and many other respected journals.

With Professor Tony Costello, he is Co-Director of the Melbourne Uro-Oncology Training Program based at Royal Melbourne Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Epworth Hospital, Richmond. Since 2010, he has convened the Urology program at the Australasian Prostate Cancer Conference, one of the World’s leading prostate cancer educational events, and also co-Convenes the bi-annual National Bladder & Kidney Cancer Symposium.

Declan is highly active in social media with a large Twitter following. He blogs regularly for the BJUI where he is Associate Editor responsible for social media.
