Debra is a clinical and research Anaesthetist with an interest in improving care for patients with cancer in the perioperative period.

Following completion of medical and anaesthesia training in Melbourne, Debra undertook a clinical fellowship at the Alfred Hospital –the major trauma centre in Victoria. She subsequently undertook a further fellowship in Cancer Anaesthesia at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre where she gained extensive experience in anaesthesia techniques for robotic surgery and the perioperative care of complex patients having major cancer surgery.

Debra is now employed as a specialist anaesthetist at both Peter MacCallum and the Alfred hospital. She also continues to work on an annual basis in the developing nation of Myanmar providing anaesthesia services for head and neck reconstructive surgery. Throughout her medical career Debra has maintained a strong interest in improving the education provided to anaesthetic trainees.

To that end, she has held several positions on the training committees of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and the Australian Society of Anaesthetists. She is also an accredited Advanced Life Support instructor.

In addition her clinical practice, Debra possesses a keen research interest in Advance Care Planning for the Perioperative Period – a program which enables patients to take control over their own medical treatment pathway. She is undertaking a research Masters of Medicine through the University of Melbourne in this area and has also run the first workshop in Australia aimed at training perioperative clinicians to facilitate Advance Care Planning for patients prior to surgery.
