Dr David Shum (Geriatrician)

Dr Shum grew up in Hong Kong and came to Brisbane to complete his high school education, followed by his two degrees at the University of Queensland. He successfully completed his training and was awarded a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians. He specializes in Geriatric Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr Shum’s primary practice is at Greenslopes Private Hospital and he also has visiting rights at Sunnybank Private Hospital and St Vincent’s Private Hospital. Dr Shum has special interests in diagnosis and management of dementia, osteoporosis management and diabetes care of older persons. He is also interested in the promotion of healthy ageing through lifestyle advice and has conducted research in the management of frailty in older persons. During his training, he has developed a keen interest in the maintenance of dignity in older hospitalized patients and considers good ongoing communication with caregivers and family to be an essential part of his practice. In addition to English, he is also fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin. Dr Shum is actively involved in teaching junior medical staff, nurses and medical students and has held the the title of Associate Lecturer, University of Queensland since 2011. In addition to bedside teaching, he has also presented in grand rounds at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and Greenslopes Private Hospital to discuss the latest updates on topics in geriatric medicine such as stroke rehabilitation, Alzheimer’s dementia and Dementia with lewy bodies. Dr Shum wishes to expand his scope of practice to include telehealth as well as domiciliary visits to private residences as well as residential aged care facilities in the near future. Outside of work, he enjoys all kinds of ball sports including basketball, volleyball, tennis and soccer, as well as going to the beach with his young family. He regularly visits Hong Kong and Southeast Asia, where his extended family remains. Dr Shum is excited to be joining Queensland Geriatric Medicine Group and looks forward to the challenge of providing an excellent and holistic service in health maintenance and health promotion for older persons around the greater Brisbane area and regional Queensland.
