Dr David Oehme MBBS (Hons) PhD FRACS is a highly qualified neurosurgeon and spine surgeon. He is extensively trained in the management and treatment of complex spine conditions and brain tumours, with a strong focus on minimally invasive surgery and keyhole techniques. David specialises in the treatment of back pain, sciatica and degenerative diseases of the spine. David utilises new generation minimally invasive technology, minimising tissue destruction and pain, and maximising neurological function. Achieving the very best surgical outcomes, with a strong focus on complication avoidance, are the priorities of David’s neurosurgical practice. He is committed to helping patient’s and their families understand their neurosurgical and spine conditions, and is passionate about applying the latest technologies to his practice of neurosurgery.

David completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at Monash University, Melbourne Australia in 2004, graduating with honours. In 2008, he commenced neurosurgical training with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, obtaining his final fellowship examinations in 2015. Throughout his neurosurgical and spine surgery training, David worked at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, The Royal Children’s Hospital, St Vincent’s Hospital, Monash Medical Centre and The Alfred Hospital.

David is dedicated to both clinical and basic science research, and was awarded his PhD in 2014. His research interests are in degenerative diseases of the spine and the use of stem cell and other novel biotechnologies to repair degenerate intervertebral discs. He is considered an expert in the field and applies his scientific understanding of spine degeneration to all of his patients.

David has won the prestigious Peter Leech research prize on two occasions, and has also been awarded numerous other scholarships and awards because of his contribution to research. Presenting his research all over the world including the USA, Europe, Asia and New Zealand, David has also published widely in peer reviewed journals including the Journal of Neurosurgery. David continues to partake in clinical research and actively supervises PhD students as well as other basic science researchers. David consults and operates at St Vincent’s public and private hospitals and is happy to manage public, private, TAC & Workcover patients.
