David trained at the Alfred and Royal Melbourne Hospitals obtaining his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 1986. He spent 2 years of advanced training in Colorectal & Upper Gastro-Intestinal surgery at the Gloucestershire Royal Infirmary in the U.K.He is currently a Visiting General Surgeon at Ballarat Health Services (where he is Head of the Upper GI Surgical Unit) and Ararat Hospital, and he is credentialed in General and Bariatric surgeon at St John of God Hospital. David consults mainly at Ballarat Surgical Clinic, but also at the Outpatient Department at Ballarat Health Service and monthly at the Ararat Medical Centre.
David evolved ERCP (removing bile duct stones via a telescope) and pioneered the introduction of laparoscopic (keyhole) operations for the gall bladder, colon and hernia repairs. David also introduced Bariatric surgery to Ballarat, performing the first Lap Band, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass and revisional procedures here. David still performs a wide range of procedures including keyhole bowel surgery, hiatal hernia repair, splenectomy as well as breast & endocrine procedures (thyroid, parathyroid and parotid).
David was an original (and remains an active) participant of the Grampians Breast Screen Service and contributes to the review meetings and the Australian Breast Cancer Audit. David has also been involved in regional audits of pancreatic andoesophageal cancer to maintain and improve safety and quality in these areas of surgery. He works to attract other sub specialist general surgeons to the area with a focus of continuing surgical quality and improvement in the region. David has met the FRACS Professional Development requirements since the programme commenced.
