I grew up in Belfast and attended Queen’s University, graduating in 2001. I completed most of my hospital training around Read More Northern Ireland, with a year in Brisbane for good measure, before moving to Chester, England to complete training as a GP in 2007. I became a partner in a surgery in Belfast in 2009, and started working as one of the local hospice doctors in the same year.
After 34 years of rain (minus one in Brisbane), I decided that I’d had enough and moved to Perth with wife and (then one) child. My wife is also a GP, and we worked together in a bulk-billing surgery in Midland for 2 years. I made the decision to move to private billing surgeries at that time, because it allows me to spend more time with each patient and to provide higher quality health care – our main goal on leaving the NHS. I have now been working at Third Avenue Surgery for just over a year, having previously worked with the GP After Hours folks when they were based at Mercy Hospital. I am interested in all aspects of General Practice and am passionate about the role of the GP in preventing illness before it causes harm. I don’t find it helpful to drag well people in to see the doctor, but am very keen to provide support and health education so that, should things start to go wrong, we can jump on any problems quickly and effectively. I am a fair weather cyclist (in recognition of the fact that we should at least try to lead by example). Beyond this, I am something of a nerd (and proud of it), spend most of my time trying to entertain/distract two children, and give thanks for the wealth of family-friendly activities that are available in and around Perth.
