Dr Sivapalan graduated in 1985 and then undertook an internship from 1985 to 1986 in Sri Lanka. She was a Resident Medical Officer from 1987 to 1989 at Latrobe Hospital, Tasmania, and from 1990 to 1991 at Alice Springs General Hospital & Flinders Medical Centre, Adelaide.
