Dr Bronte Ayres MBBS FRACP FCSANZ is a clinical cardiologist specialising in echocardiography, transoesophageal echocardiography, arrhythmia management and perioperative cardiac care. He has been with SA Heart since its inception in 1984.
Dr Ayres graduated from Adelaide University in 1971 where he was 3rd in his final year. In 1972 he commenced post graduate studies at the Royal Adelaide Hospital before commencing advanced cardiac training in 1975. Dr Ayres was then awarded the National Heart Foundation overseas travel grant and went on to complete his advanced training at the University of Illinois, Chicago, USA in 1977 and 1978. He was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 1978.
Since returning to Adelaide Dr Ayres has worked primarily in private practice with senior visiting cardiologist attachments at the Flinders Medical Centre and the Repatriation General Hospital. Dr Ayres was responsible for the introduction of transoesophageal echo in Australia and worked in the intra-cardiac electrophysiology field at Flinders Medical Centre for 20 years before focusing on perioperative care for Cardiac Surgery at Ashford and intra-operative transoesophageal echo.
For the last 30 years Dr Ayres tutored medical students at Flinders Medical Centre and more recently has been supervising cardiology advance trainees at Ashford.
Dr Ayres has previously held the positions of State Chairman of the College of Physicians and Chief Barker of Variety, the children’s charity in South Australia. He held the position of Chairman of the Board at SA Heart from 2008-2010.
