Associate Professor Brian Herman received his cardiac training at the University of Pittsburgh following completion of his PhD thesis in the pathology of muscular dystrophy. He has been practicing coronary interventional work with balloon and stents for 3 decades, having been intimately involved with the evolution of this subspecialty.
He relocated to Tasmania in 2003 and is currently the Director of Cardiology & Cardiovascular Interventions at the Launceston General Hospital and Director of the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory at Calvary St Vincent’s Hospital, Launceston.
Over the years he has acquired a broad clinical experience in the management of complex coronary interventions including the use of rotational atherectomy, intravascular ultrasound and complex approaches to chronic totally occluded vessels. His interests have included cardiac and coronary haemodynamics as well as the percutaneous treatment of non-coronary cardiac pathology.
More recently (over the past 4 years) he has started the non-invasive assessment of coronary anatomy using computer tomography (CT) technology at the LGH. His future plans include the percutaneous treatment of aortic valve disease without the need for open heart surgery.
Along with his clinical work, he has a large teaching responsibility as director of training for the Department of Cardiology at the LGH. He has lectured frequently throughout Tasmania and has been an invited speaker nationally having authored over 25 peer reviewed publications.
