Bernhard Riedel is an academic anaesthesiologist with a special interest in oncologic and cardiothoracic anaesthesia.
Bernhard currently serves as Head of Department, Department of Cancer Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine, at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and holds an academic appointment with the University of Melbourne.

Professor of Cardiac Anaesthesiology at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, USA. Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Anaesthesiology at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas, USA. Consultant Anaesthetist and Senior Lecturer at the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust, London, UK. Bernhard completed his anaesthesia residency at the University of Cape Town; his fellowship in cardiothoracic anaesthesia at Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust, London; his PhD at University of London, UK; and his MBA at the University of Tennessee, USA.
As an academic anaesthesiologist Bernhard has published extensively (31 funded research grants and 207 publications; including 87 peer-reviewed publications). Bernhard has effectively mentored numerous junior doctors in research;
with his research team and mentees receiving six research awards at international scientific meetings and four clinical quality improvement awards. Bernhard’s ongoing research interests focus on improving surgical outcomes through enhanced risk stratification and preoperative optimization. More specifically to the cancer surgery population Bernhard’s research collaborative investigates the impact of anaesthetic technique on long-term outcomes after cancer surgery.
Bernhard’s international experience allows him to play a foundational role in developing a global educational initiative to improve the understanding of the impact of perioperative factors on outcomes following cancer surgery. This collaborative (which includes, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre [Australia], M. D. Anderson Cancer Centre [USA], Royal Marsden Cancer Centre [UK]), and VUmc [Netherlands]) has developed an annual international Cancer Anaesthesia Conference and was hosted in Melbourne in 2014. In this regard, Bernhard has also edited a comprehensive textbook on “Acute Care for the Cancer Patient”, Guest edited the ‘Cancer and Anaesthesia’ in: Best Practice & Research Clinical Anesthesiology and serves on numerous editorial boards. Bernhard’s commitment to education is evident by: Organization of 12 national and international conferences, 60 international lectures, including 6 plenary / visiting professorships, and 2 teaching awards.
