Dr Bassem Dawood underwent training in respiratory and sleep medicine at Frankston Hospital, the Austin Hospital and the Northern Hospital to attain the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP).
He currently works as a respiratory physician at the Northern Hospital and is an Honorary physician at the Austin Hospital. Additionally, he has admitting rights at Warringal Private, Epping Private and Northpark Private hospitals. He also provides peri-operative care in these hospitals.
In addition, he is actively involved in teaching undergraduate and physician trainees at the Northern Hospital.
Dr Dawood has extensive experience in all facets of respiratory and sleep medicine. He manages various respiratory disorders including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchiectasis and interstitial lung disease (ILD). He also has a special interest in the diagnosis and management of complex sleep disorders.
His major sub-speciality interests are in the early detection and surveillance of lung cancer. He underwent specialised training in bronchoscopic and minimally invasive thoracic procedures and is one of the few specialists in Melbourne who is proficient in performing endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) sampling of suspicious lung lesions and lymph nodes. He also specialises in pleural diseases and runs the pleural service at the Northern Hospital.
Dr Dawood is a member of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ), the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and the American Thoracic Society (ATS). He is also an associate fellow at the Institute of Breathing and Sleep (IBAS).
Dr Dawood is fluent in both English and Arabic. Bassem is a keen photographer and loves the outdoors where he can capture special moments with his young family.
