She then moved into General Practice at Capalaba Medical Centre in 1982.Over the years she has developed special interests in breast disease and infertility. She currently combines general practice with her work at BreastScreen which involves the assessment and counselling of women recalled for review following their screening mammograms. Dr Bignell is a Fellow of the Australiasian Society of Breast Physicians.

Dr Bignell holds a certificate qualification as a Natural Family Planning Medical Consultant obtained in 2010 when she travelled to Omaha to train in the new womens health science of NaProTechnology. Using this approach she manages issues such as infertility, recurrent miscarriage, PCOS, premenstrual syndrome, postnatal depression and others using bio-identical hormones to correct imbalances detected on thorough evaluation of the woman’s menstrual cycle. As a result many couples are empowered to achieve a healthy pregnancy outcome without the need for IVF, and women feel healthier. Dr Bignell is a member of a research team at the Mater Mothers Fertility and Research Clinic which is studying the effect of using bio-identical progesterone to improve outcomes for couples experiencing infertility and recurrent miscarriage. She is a current member of IIRRM. (International Institute of Restorative Reproductive Medicine)
