Dr Burns specialises in orthopaedic and trauma surgery, primary and revision joint replacement, reconstruction of the hip and knee joints, sports injuries and arthroscopy of the hip and knee joints. In fact, he is one of the few Australian surgeons to have trained overseas to refine his hip arthroscopy techniques.

Dr Al Burns graduated in medicine from the University of Sydney in 1995, and completed his advanced orthopaedic training in Sydney, attaining his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2004. He then completed a further 18 months of fellowship training; six months with the Canberra Orthopaedic Group in hip and knee replacement and reconstruction, and then 12 months in primary and revision hip and knee replacement, and hip arthroscopy at the London Health Sciences Centre, University of Western Ontario, Canada.

Dr Burns is currently a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Canberra Specialist Surgical Centre and Calvary John James Hospital; as well as The Canberra Hospital and Calvary Public Hospital. He is a member of the Arthroplasty Society of Australia and member of the Hip Arthroscopy Section of the Arthroplasty Society.

Personal Assistant to Dr Burns is Sue Hughes, who brings both medical specialist and hospital administration experience to the role. She looks forward to guiding you through the process to ensure you receive optimal care and support. She is ably assisted by Gaye Piper, an experienced, friendly, support person who helps with bookings, telephone and the medical typing.
