Alex Boussioutas is a tenured Professor of Medicine at University of Melbourne. He is an academic gastroenterologist and general physician working at Royal Melbourne Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Western Health. He heads the gastrointestinal genetics section of the Familial Cancer Service at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and has an active research laboratory.
As a clinical gastroenterologist his interests involve screening, surveillance and prevention of cancers of the gastrointestinal tract. He is trained in general gastroenterology and hepatology and has specific areas of interest including: endoscopic screening and surveillance, Barrett’s oesophagus, oesophageal cancer, gastric cancer, gastric intestinal metaplasia, colorectal cancer screening and
surveillance particularly in persons with increased risk of cancer due to their family history. He is trained in Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy and conducts endoscopy sessions in public and private institutions.
He has an active practice as a general gastroenterologist and will see all referrals.
Dr Boussioutas trained at University of Melbourne and obtained his PhD through Departments of Pathology and Medicine. He was a visiting Fellow of Wolfson College at Cambridge University, UK. He has an international reputation in research of gastrointestinal cancers. His PhD research won him the prestigious Sir Peter MacCallum Research Medal.
