A/Prof Alan McNab is an ophthalmologist specialising in treatment of diseases of the orbit (eye socket), eyelids and lacrimal system (tear ducts).

He graduated from Melbourne University in 1979, and trained as an ophthalmologist at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital before undertaking post-graduate fellowships in orbital, lacrimal and ocular plastic (eyelid) surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, from 1987 to 1989.

He has published over 140 papers in specialist journals, over 15 book chapters and authored a text book on Orbital and Lacrimal Surgery, now in its second edition.

He is one of only six members of the Orbital Society outside North America and Europe and is also a member of the America, European, Australasian and Asia-Pacific Societies of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is also on the Editorial Board of several international journals.

A/Prof McNab is the Director of the Orbital, Plastic and Lacrimal Clinic at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. Through this clinic, doctors from many parts of the world, as well as from within Australia, come to train under his guidance.

His main areas of interest are diseases and surgery of the orbit such as thyroid eye disease, tumours and trauma, surgery of eyelid disorders including ptosis (drooping of the lids), entropion and ectropion (in-turned or out-turned lids), skin cancers of the eyelids and surgery for tear duct obstructions.
