In 2019 Dr Mark Zagorksi was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his many years of service to Rural General Practice.

At the 2008 RDAA Annual General Meeting, Mark was received the prestigious Rural Doctor of the Year Award in recognition of many years of exemplary service to rural medicine.

Mark was born in Melbourne in 1952. He always wanted to be a doctor and finally graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1976 .

Postgraduate training occurred between 1976 and 1981 and included the following training posts: Intern year at the Repatriation Hospital in Heidelberg and PANCH in Preston; GP terms in Traralgon; Obstetrics and Gynae at Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester (UK); ENT at The Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth (UK); Advanced General Practice in St Kilda; General Medicine , A & E and Anaesthetics at Maroondah Hospital in Ringwood.

This training period included marriage to Jane in 1977 and extensive travel through Asia and Europe. In June 1981 The Zagorskis arrived in Mount Beauty and spent the next 2 decades raising their family in this great valley.

Mark has interests in most aspects of rural general practice but in particular he concentrates on anaesthetics, trauma management, back manipulation and acupuncture. He has been Honorary Treasurer of the Rural Doctors Association of Victoria for 21 years . He is a Course Director and Senior Instructor with the RACS EMST Course and a Medical Advisor to The Australian Ski Patrollers Association.

In January 2015 Mark took on the role as North East Victoria’s Field Emergency Medical Officer with Victoria’s State Health Emergency Response Plan

Mark's other interests include Swimming, Cycling, Motorcycling (Vespa GT200), Downhill and Cross Country Skiing and he has completed 23 cross country ski marathons (The Kangaroo Hoppet).

Mark and Jane’s children have both returned to the valley - Matthew is a Ski Patroller and Engineering Draughtsman while Laura completed her Rural General Practice training at Mount Beauty Medical Centre , works there as a GP.
