CLINICAL INTERESTS All aspects of young womens reproductive health – including menstrual problems (excessive bleeding and/or pain), amenorrhoea, ovarian problems, congenital anomalies affecting the reproductive tract and reproductive hormones and and the cyclic exacerbation of ‘non-gynaecological symptoms’ including cyclic seizures, asthma, chronic fatigue.
BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE Professor Sonia Grover has extensive experience in paediatric and adolescent gynaecology having worked in this field for over 20 years. She has been instrumental in establishing this subspecialty in Australia as well as an Asia and internationally with teaching, providing clinical support and mentoring. As a gynaecologist, Sonia has the skills and expertise to undertake surgery on the reproductive and genital tract.
Sonia holds interest and expertise in the care of young women with: Menstrual problems – including heavy and painful periods, and also in young women with physical and intellectual disabilities Bleeding disorders Congenital anomalies (including reproductive tract anomalies, bladder exstrophy), and variations in sex development (including congenital adrenal hyperplasia, androgen insensitivity syndrome, Turner syndrome, premature ovarian insufficiency). Pelvic and perineal pain Vulval skin conditions Ovarian cysts and ovarian torsion For many of these various complex problems Sonia works closely with other team members depending on the problem, this may include paediatricians, paediatric endocrinologists, psychologists, haematologists, rehabilitation specialists and surgeons.
Sonia enjoys working closely within a team to care for young people with gender dysphoria.
As a gynaecologist, she has the surgical skills to undertake ovarian surgery and reconstructive surgeries. RESEARCH INTERESTS Sonia has published extensively in the field of paediatric and adolescent gyanecology including on the topics of long-term outcomes of young women with congenital anomalies (including congenital adrenal hyperplasia, bladder exstrophy, cloacal anomalies, vaginal agenesis); menstrual management in young women with intellectual disabilities; bleeding disorders; period pain; management of ovarian torsion.
Sonia is a member of the executive committee of the international paediatric and adolescent gynaecology society ( FIGIJ) and the Australian and New Zealand Society of paediatric and adolescent Gynaecology
