Rachel Roberts-Thomson completed her undergraduate medical training at the University of Adelaide in 2000. Following an intern year at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Rachel proceeded to work in Melbourne gaining her Medical Oncology specialisation. A research year was spent at Cork University Hospital, Ireland. Following this she returned to Melbourne to work at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
Rachel returned to Adelaide in 2011 and commenced a position as a Medical Oncologist at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital followed by joining the North Adelaide Oncology team. In 2022 she set up Cancer Care Adelaide.
Rachel for 8 years was on the Scientific Advisory Committee for The Queen Elizabeth Hospital ethics board as well as being on the Advanced Training Committee (ATC) in Medical Oncology with the Royal Australian College of Physicians. Both of these roles she views as "important and rewarding". Current roles are that of being on the SA Health chemotherapy development committee and chemo-governance for Central Adelaide Local Health Network. She is also part of the Working party for the Australian Melanoma treatment guidelines.
Rachel has a particular interest in melanoma, skin cancers and thoracic malignancies. She now has been Principal investigator on many melanoma, lung cancer and mesothelioma clinical trials and maintains a comprehensive clinical trial portfolio as well as keeping up her own research interests. She supervises Medical Oncology and Palliative care trainees as well as medical students and physician trainees. What drives Rachel? Her patient confidence that they are getting the best available care.
