Associate Professor Peter Bampton is a Gastroenterologist with an interest in inflammatory bowel disease, functional gut disorders and gastrointestinal cancer prevention. He was a founding member of the Australian IBD Association. He helped develop the largest Australian surveillance programs for people at risk of colorectal and oesophageal cancer, and was a founding member of the ANZ IBD Research Consortium. Associate Professor Peter Bampton graduated in Medicine from the University of Adelaide in 1988, and undertook specialist training in Gastroenterology at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Flinders Medical Centre. He then obtained a NHMRC Post-graduate Research Scholarship at the St George Campus of the University of New South Wales, before returning as a Staff Specialist at Flinders Medical Centre in 1998. He was Head of Luminal Gastroenterology at FMC from 2006 until 2017and was granted academic status as an Associate Professor at Flinders University in 2006. In 2017 he moved to the Royal Adelaide Hospital as a Senior Staff Specialist with a co-ordinating role in Quality and Safety in the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He co-founded Southern Gastro-intestinal Services, the forerunner to SA Group of Specialists in 2000, and works privately at the Tennyson Centre and the Calvary Adelaide Hospital. He is a past elected member of council of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia, as well as chair of its education arm, the Digestive Health Foundation. He was a founding member of the national executive the Australian IBD Association. He was a member of the SA Reference Committee for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program, and has contributed to the NHMRC Guidelines on Colorectal Cancer Prevention. He has a keen interest in Quality and Safety, having undertaken courses in quality improvement from NSW Health as well as the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. He has published over a 100 scientific papers, opinions and reviews and has contributed to both the Australian Medicines and Therapeutic Guidelines Handbooks
