Justin Mariani is a consultant cardiologist with extensive expertise in acute cardiology and coronary care management, advanced heart failure management, cardiomyopathies, device implantation and management, echocardiography, cardiac catheterisation, and arrhythmia management.
Justin is one of less than a handful of cardiologists in Australia who are subspecialty trained in both advanced heart failure management and device implantation and management, a novel field described as Interventional Heart Failure.
His PhD, between 2005 and 2008 (awarded 2009) at Monash University and undertaken primarily at Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute and the Alfred Hospital, evaluated advanced heart failure pathophysiology and management, specifically focusing on gene therapy and stem cell therapy for heart failure. This was followed by further training at Toronto General Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Canada (2008-2010) where he undertook a Heart Failure and Interventional Cardiology Fellowship. He developed expertise during this time in advanced device implantation, including implantable cardiac defibrillators (ICD) and biventricular pacemakers and defibrillators, and advanced cardiac catheterisation along with echocardiography and stress echocardiography.
On return to Melbourne in early 2010, Justin was appointed as a consultant cardiologist in two of Melbourne’s leading academic public hospitals (The Alfred Hospital and St Vincent’s Hospital) where he is involved in their heart failure and device programs. He also has an active research role in the Heart Failure Research Group at the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, is a Senior Lecturer with the Department of Medicine, Monash University, and is an author of over 35 papers. He is also the Clinical Lead in Cardiology at Bairnsdale Hospital, and has rooms at St Vincent’s Private.
