Dr Rob Coles has been an Endocrinologist since 1986. He graduated in Medicine in 1979 with first class honours (one of 6 in his year), from the University of NSW.

After graduation Rob started his physician training at the then new Westmead Hospital. His Endocrinology training started as an intern under the tutorship of Prof Cres Eastman (head of Endocrinology). The fascination with hormones was stimulated from that term and has remained ever since. While at Westmead he pursued many other interests. He was nominated President of the Westmead Residents Association, was Secretary for the Inter-Hospital Sports Committee was even the union representative for Public Services Union.

In 1985, with the help of a Commonwealth Overseas Scholarship he went to London to work with his other great mentor in Endocrinology, Prof Howard Jacobs. The research that he performed while at the Middlesex Hospital was the basis for his Doctor of Medicine (UNSW). A great time was had in London with the ability to travel to the continent and explore Europe with his wife Felicia. Wine areas were of particular interest and as an extra curricular activity wine appreciation courses were taken through the London Adult Education System.

After returning to Sydney in 1987, a private practice was commenced in Penrith. In 1988 he was appointed as the first Endocrinologist to the Nepean Hospital. He remained Head of the Department of Endocrinology until 2007. He also served on and then later was Chairman for the Nepean Hospital Research and Ethics Committee, he was Head of the Division of Medicine through the founding years of Nepean Hospital becoming a Teaching Hospital with Sydney University.
