Mr Soong Chua is an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in arthroscopic and reconstructive shoulder and knee surgery as well as joint replacement surgery.
Born and educated in Melbourne, Soong completed his medical degree through the University of Melbourne Medical School. He obtained his fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2012, graduating from the Victorian Orthopaedic Surgery Training Program.
Soong undertook further subspecialty training internationally in London and Milan, where he was involved in the treatment of professional athletes including international soccer, rugby and cricket players.
In London, he completed the prestigious Calvert Fellowship in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth with Mr Andrew Wallace and Mr Philip Ahrens. During this time, he gained experience in shoulder stabilisation surgery, arthroscopic surgery of the rotator cuff and biceps tendon, joint replacement surgery and elbow surgery.
Soong then moved to Milan to work with Mr Alessandro Castagna (past president of the European Society for Shoulder and Elbow Surgery) at the Istituto Clinico Humanitas, focussing on joint replacement surgery, including reverse total shoulder replacement, with further training in stabilisation and rotator cuff surgery of the shoulder.
In Melbourne, Soong continues to work in the public system through his appointments as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at both the Austin and Box Hill Hospitals. He maintains an interest in teaching orthopaedic trainees, junior doctors and medical students through these institutions.
