Mr Brough was born in Surrey, England and educated at Dulwich College in London. He graduated from the University of Birmingham Medical School in 1983 and subsequently performed research in transplantation immunology at the same institution, for which he was awarded a Masters in Science. He trained in General Surgery in Leicester and Sheffield before becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1989.
