Michael Killen grew up in Tamworth and studied medicine at the University of NSW in Sydney. He graduated in 1978 and interned at St Vincent’s hospital, Sydney, and Griffith hospital. He enrolled in the Family Medicine Program in Victoria in 1979 and returned to Tamworth in 1981 where he has worked as a general practitioner in all aspects of family medicine from delivering babies to aged care. He worked part time as a doctor in the Australian Army Reserve for 20 years, mostly with 12/16 Hunter River Lancers in Tamworth. He enjoys spending time with his family and is a keen golfer.
