Dr Lisa Carroll studied medicine at the University of Queensland finishing with honours. She subsequently undertook general training in a number of Queensland hospitals, finally entering physician training.
During her training in Internal Medicine, she made the decision to subspecialise in Rheumatology. Her decision was based on a number of factors, but her love of a diagnostic challenge was one of the main drivers.
Subsequently she also completed a Research Masters in Philosophy in the prestigious Diamantina Institute [University of Queensland] supervised by a world-renowned rheumatologist and immunologist, and completing her dissertation, which looked at inflammation as a driver of early cardiovascular death, in 2005. She has published this work in international journals and presented this work at national rheumatology conferences.
She is a senior lecturer at the University of Queensland. She has taught medical students and graduate doctors, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate physiotherapy and podiatry students.
She continues to be involved in Arthritis Queensland and in the Australian Rheumatology Association and has an ongoing interest in patient advocacy.
Most recently, she has completed an 18 month course in physician ultrasonography, which has enabled her to perform diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound for her patients at the time of their routine visit, improving diagnostic accuracy and fast tracking management, all the while reducing financial outlay for the patient and avoiding radiation.
In addition, the physician ultrasonography certification enables her to provide musculoskeletal ultrasound services for the general community, as referred by their own doctors.
