Professor Hirst graduated with M.B.B.S. (first class honours) from University of Queensland, completed an internship at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane and undertook 3 years of Ophthalmology registrarship at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne. He later obtained The Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Ophthalmologists and The Royal Australian College of Surgeons, as well as a Diploma of Ophthalmology. After many years abroad working at the Wilmer Institute at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore and the Bethesda Eye Institute, St Louis University, Missouri. Professor Hirst returned to Australia as the Chair of Ophthalmology, at the University of Queensland/Princess Alexandra Hospital. Professor Hirst also became Executive Director of the Prevent Blindness Foundation and established the first eye bank in Queensland where he remains as Medical Director. He is also CEO of the Queensland Eye Institute and Professor of the University of Queensland's School of Medicine. His area of expertise and special interests are pterygium, corneal transplantation, and ocular surface disease.
