Dr Johan Burger grew up in a small farming town in Western Cape South Africa. He studied medicine at Stellenbosch University where he qualified in 1982. After working in a large country hospital in Surgery and Obstetrics for 2 years, as well as in the South African Defence Force for 2 years, he worked as a GP in a country town (Villersdorp) for 14 years.
In 2001 he came to Australia for a working holiday for 6 months as a GP in Morawa in the northern wheatbelt. In that time, he and his family decided to make Australia their new home. They immigrated in 2002 and he worked in Morawa for two and a half years and in Wongan Hills for 4 years, before joining Australind Medical Centre in 2008.
He qualified as a FRACGP in 2002 and is interested in all aspects of general practice – specifically preventative medicine, chronic disease management, woman’s and men’s health, paediatrics, skin cancer checks, minor surgery, pre-employment medicals and travel medicine.
Johan is married to Erna (Maths teacher at Grace Christian school) and has 4 adult children and 5 grandchildren. He enjoys getting dirty in his garden on a one acre block in Leschenault, caravanning and camping, braai as often as possible, cycling a bit and fixing/restoring old cars.
