I was born in Dwellingup before the 1961 fire. I went to Hale School 1944-51. I commenced Medicine at UWA but completed the subsequent years in Adelaide graduating MB,BS. In 1958 as there was no Medical School in Perth then. Lucky for me, as I found my beautiful wife, now of 57 years. Much later in 2007 I was awarded MB,BS.(UWA) Ad Eundum Gradum.
After being inspired into Cardiology by Dr. Tom Cullity my focus was wholly directed to Cardiology from then on. My residency was completed at RPH & PMH before I embarked for United Kingdom as an aspiring Cardiologist with the dream to train with the great Dr Paul Wood however, that was not to be as he died aged 55 just after I had gained a House Physician post under him at the Brompton Hospital.
After almost 5 years I returned to Perth & after Registrar roles I was appointed Assistant Physician in Cardiology at RPH in 1968 & became Head of Department in Cardiology in 1977.
My career highlights include implanting the first Transvenous Permanent Pacemaker in Western Australia in 1965. I performed the first Coronary Angiogram in Perth after a year at the Cleveland Clinic with Dr. F. Mason Sones on a National Heart Foundation scholarship in 1970. I was unequivocally & solely responsible for the introduction of coronary angioplasty in Australia with Dr Peter Valentine performing the first in May in Melbourne 1980 but no subsequent procedures followed. Whereas by the end of that year three took place at Royal Perth Hospital & 8 the next year. I have actively taught & mentored many who have followed me into Cardiology since then. Interests outside medicine include Australian history including a period as President of the Royal WA Historical Society in 1974. Shire councillor & President of the Shire of Peppermint Grove 1973-98 (where my father was born).I played field Hockey up to 1990 in the Vintage grade & spent the summers sailing my Hobie Cat 14 & represented Australia at the World Championships in Mauritius 1986. Cycling followed which is actively continued today.
I have had a close relationship with the American based Society for Cardiac Angiography & Interventions having served a term on their Board of Trustees 1999-2002 & on the Editorial Board for some years. I continue to attend this society which is the only major group wholly focusing on Cardiac Intervention.
I am an Emeritus Consultant Interventional Cardiologist & have clinical sessions at CVS in Hollywood Specialist Centre as I continue to enjoy Cardiology.
