I started practicing in 2009, and have maintained a passion for trying to better understand and assist people with diverse psychologies, live different lives, and experience varied challenges (e.g., from those struggling with homelessness or repeated imprisonment, to ambitious entrepreneurs, dedicated activists, unconventional artists, and others who do not fit stereotypical categorizations).
Early in my career, I fixated on learning trademarked “special” techniques and over-complicated interventions, but over time, I have come to appreciate why good therapy is often basic in appearance. Helping clients non-defensively reflect on oneself and carefully interpret patterns can just be an ordinary-looking conversation. Likewise, heartfelt empathy, appropriate affirmations, well-timed insights that are otherwise unwelcomed, and measured efforts to redirect the client back to what is unpleasant but pertinent, are amongst the basic-looking things that make therapy a therapeutic experience for many clients.
I was taught to do the above well, emphasis must be placed on getting to know the intricacies of each client’s unique personality and being attuned to the nuances of their internal experiences. Being able to imagine what it might be like to experience the world, other people, one’s inner conflicts, and even the therapy process the way they do is central to the way I try and understand each client and guide our sessions.
People have such phenomenally diversified psychologies, ways of life, and encountered challenges. I am grateful for being given a chance to help, while learning about the complexities of real-world psychology from those I try to help. In many ways, psychotherapy is a mutually rewarding endeavor.
While dedicated to clinical practice, Justin also guest lectured on advanced topics for the clinical psychology masters program at UNSW, and spends one day a week training prospective clinical psychologists at UTS. He was also invited to share his expertise with the clinical division of the Australian Psychological Society (APS).
Justin adopts an integrative approach to psychotherapy. His mostly draws from the theories and principals of Psychodynamic Therapy (PDT) and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), supplemented by a few other modalities that are related to or derivatives of these core therapies.
Justin is from Hong Kong. He speaks fluent English and native Cantonese. He sees adults and late-adolescents, and has experience providing psychotherapy to Psychiatrist and Psychologist clients.
