Dr Jon Shenfine is an Upper Gastrointestinal surgeon with surgical interests in weight loss (Bariatric), oesophageal and gastric cancer, acid reflux disorders and anti-reflux surgery, gallstones and hernias. He has a particular interest in advanced laparoscopic or minimally invasive surgical techniques resulting in smaller scars, a more rapid return to normal activity and less pain post-operatively. Born in England, after qualifying as a doctor, Dr Shenfine spent three years studying patients with oesophageal cancer, leading to the award of a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD). His surgical training was undertaken in Melbourne, Brisbane and Britain. He became a Consultant Surgeon in September 2008 at the largest oesophago-gastric cancer unit in the UK with a national and international reputation for clinical work and research. He migrated to Australia in 2012 and took on a specialist Consultant Surgeon role in Adelaide. Dr Shenfine is a Fellow of both the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS). He has an international reputation for research in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Surgery at the University of Adelaide and teaches at the University. He speaks internationally on Upper GI Surgery and helped to set up an Oesophageal Cancer Awareness campaign in the UK.
